Powerman 5000 is a metal band formed in Boston in 1991 .

history

Founded in Boston, the band moved to Los Angeles before their first releases in order to gain a foothold in the music business. The only permanent member of the band, the half brother of Rob Zombie , Michael "Spider / Spider One" Cummings, earned with Powerman 5000, according to Allmusic , a cult status as an underground-electro-metal band. Significant for this were the 1994 indie debut EP True Force and the 1995 album The Blood Splat Rating System . Two years later the band switched to Dreamworks Records and relocated to Los Angeles. A revised version of the debut as Mega !! was released via Dreamworks. KungFu Radio released.

Tours with popular artists such as Marilyn Manson and Korn and festival appearances, especially at Ozzfest, increased the popularity of the project. The upcoming album Tonight the Stars Revolt! was recognized as a platinum album based on sales achieved after the music videos for the singles When Worlds Collide and Nobody's Real were presented on MTV . Due to a dispute with the former record label , the album Anyone For Doomsday? taken off the market and subsequently achieved high collector values. The album was released digitally in 2009. Streaming services like Spotify also offer publication. In the course of the production of the incomplete album, there were rifts in the band structure, whereupon the bassist Dorian Heartsong and the drummer Al Pahanish were eliminated and replaced. With their fourth completed album, Transform , the band initiated a style change. The album debuted at number 25 on the Billboard charts when it was released . The track Free turned out to be a hit . In 2004 the band released a compilation with rarities on Cummings own label Megatronic. During the production of the fifth album, Williams and Tempesta were replaced by Johnny Heatley and Terry Corso by Alien Ant Farm . Since then, Cummings has changed the line-up of the band several times and released a number of other albums and singles which, despite collaborations with renowned companies such as Universal Music Group , Pavement Music and Cleopatra Records, no longer achieved the popularity of the early work. After Destroy What You Enjoy was released via DRT in 2006, Powerman 5000 released a compilation with Copies, Clones & Replicants with cover versions about Cleopatra, Somewhere on the Other Side of Nowhere 2009 via Mighty Loud Entertainment , 2014 the album Builders of the Future via Universal Music Enterprises , 2017 New Wave via Pavement Music and 2020 The Noble Rot via Cleopatra Records.

style

The webzine Allmusic as well as the music magazine Sonic Seducer describe the music played by Powerman 5000 as electro-metal. Maik Koltermann described the album Mega !! KungFu Radio for Visions as "a less embarrassing - but not necessarily more original - American version of Clawfinger ."

“With a conventional rock band line-up, Powerman 5000 usually play a handful of metal riffs to an admittedly pretty cool, bubbling, almost funky bass, while singer Spider either uses the weirdo spoken- singing technique mentioned above or simply bobs around a little. Plus a lot of effects. "

Later albums borrowed more from punk and witnessed a style development. Tobias Dahs discussed New Wave for Powermetal.de , using the term Industrial Metal for Powerman 5000, however, referring to popular alternative metal names such as Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie for comparison. In further discussions it is pointed out that the style of the band has changed only marginally.
