Universal Soldier - The Return is the sequel to Roland Emmerich's Universal Soldier from 1992 . The film opened in German cinemas on September 2, 1999.

action

A new generation of Universal Soldiers is being developed on behalf of the government. For cost reasons, however, the project is to be discontinued, whereupon the supercomputer SETH runs amok and takes control of the Universal Soldier. Luc Deveraux, himself once a universal soldier and advisor for the new UniSol program, is the only one who can help in this situation and thus takes up the fight against SETH. Later, the computer kidnaps Luc's daughter in order to force a confrontation with Luc. In the end, SETH is destroyed by Luc single-handedly and Luc can free his daughter from the clutches of the supercomputer, but first he has to face the UniSols controlled by SETH, which does not cause him any particular problems.

production

The budget for the film was $ 45 million.

The film flopped at the box office (grossing: around 10 million US dollars) and did not make the long-awaited comeback for Jean-Claude van Damme on the big screen.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that he only watched the film because numerous emails asked him to write a review. He also wrote that he had "wasted 90 minutes" and praised - "to be nice" - some explosions.

"Action film at the lowest level that fails to compensate its audience with spectacular viewing values for its idiotic story."

“Seven years after his box office hit 'Universal Soldier', Van Damme is back. 'The Return' ignores the two TV productions made in 1998 without Van Damme and relies on the success formula of the original: explosive action, makeshift plot and stupid dialogues. Only that Dolph Lundgren is missing makes things a little more bearable. "

Sequels

A sequel entitled Universal Soldier: Regeneration was released direct on DVD in the US in February 2010. The direct-to-DVD production premiered at the Austin Fantastic Fest in the United States. The main actor is again Jean-Claude Van Damme together with Dolph Lundgren and Andrei Arlovski . In 2012, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning was another sequel to the film series. As with the third part, John Hyams took over the direction. Van Damme and Lundgren can be seen in their roles again. However, the events in Universal Soldier: The Return are not discussed in either of the films .
