Universal Soldier 3 - Bloody Business is the second sequel to Roland Emmerich's Universal Soldier . Just like its direct predecessor Universal Soldier 2 - Brothers under Arms , the film was directed for television. The plot of the film continues seamlessly from the second part.

action

Towards the end of the second part, Luc Deveraux's brother John has increasingly remembered his human existence and eventually sacrificed his life to save Luc aka GR44 ( Matt Battaglia ) and television news anchor Veronica Roberts ( Chandra West ). The third part also begins with this review. Due to a betrayal of the deputy CIA director ( Burt Reynolds ), the "UniSol" program, which had only been apparently destroyed, is restarted in the third part. He wants to steal a load of gold bars with a newly created unit, which should go to Israel as reparation for the Holocaust. For this, the deputy CIA director relies on the help of the scientist Dr. Walker ( Richard McMillan ), who literally grows a clone from Eric's DNA.

Luc Devereaux and Roberts continue their attempts to expose the unity of the "Universal Soldiers". But after a hostage-taking accidentally turns Veronica Roberst into a murder suspect and a fugitive, the duo leave the city and go into hiding. They come u. a. to Canada, where Roberts meets with her former boss Charles ( Juan Chioran ) and asks for his help. However, the "Cyberwealth Conference", which Charles will meet and report on, will be hijacked by terrorists. Roberts is supposed to read out the terrorists' demands so that they are not exposed. Luc Devereaux, meanwhile, kills the hostage-taking terrorists, but also reveals his stay. Three of the terrorists killed are later resurrected as Universal Soldiers. Later, Luc Deveraux succeeds in capturing one of the Universal Soldiers and receiving information from him about the planned gold heist. Deveraux's brother, who received his complete memory in addition to his DNA, is supposed to kill Luc and Veronica Roberts. The end of the film is kept relatively open and suggests that Bill Clinton is also a Universal Soldier.

criticism

The lexicon of international films wrote: "Repeated (television) continuation of a martial story that indulges in non-stop action."

At the German television newspaper TV Spielfilm the work came off comparatively badly in the - as usual short - criticism. After three short sentences as a summary of the contents, the verdict is: "The lead-back fold-out now explores the" romantic potential "of the story - now it's really enough!".

In the book "Spine Grinder: The Movies Most Critics Will not Write about" the film was simply "really boring second TV sequel" ( English " really dull second tv sequel " ) angekanzelt.

The reviewer from kino.de , on the other hand, benevolently stated in his final conclusion: "Third part of the" Universal Soldier "saga, which offers action fun and thrills even without Van Damme."

background

The film was made in the same year as its direct predecessor Universal Soldier 2 - Brothers under Arms , to which Universal Soldier 3 - Bloody Business is seamlessly connected in terms of content. The actors Matt Battaglia, (Luc Deveraux / GR44), Chandra West (Veronica Roberts) and Burt Reynolds (Mentor / CIA Deputy Director) repeated their roles. In the first part of the series , simply titled Universal Soldier , Jean-Claude Van Damme and Ally Walker played the roles of Luc Deveraux and Veronica Roberts, respectively.

One year after the production of parts 2 and 3 - and seven years after the original film - Universal Soldier - The Return, was also a continuation of the original material in 1999 . However, this was produced for the cinema and Jean-Claude Van Damme took on the leading role. The events from Universal Soldier 2 and Universal Soldier 3 were completely ignored in this film.

In the English original, Burt Reynolds plays the role of mentor or the deputy CIA director with a strong Irish accent.

For the TV premiere on Sat.1 , the film was shortened by 3 minutes and 3 seconds in order to be approved for those aged 16 and over. 17 scenes were affected by the cuts. With a running time of 1 hours, 32 minutes and 48 seconds, the German FSK18 version is 1 minute and 55 seconds shorter than the uncut US version of the film. A total of 14 cut scenes were recorded.
