Hugo II (Vaudémont)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hugo II. (* Around 1167 ; † spring 1242 ) was a count of Vaudémont . He was a son of Count Gerhard II († 1188 ) and his wife, Gertrude von Joinville.

Hugo moved in the 1180s years as crusaders in the Holy Land . There he fought in 1187 in the famous Battle of Hattin , after which he was captured by Saladin . He returned to his homeland in Lorraine around 1189 and took over his father's inheritance. He did not take part in the third crusade , which began at the same time .

Around the same time he married Hedwiga von Reynel with whom he had several children, including:

  • Hugo III , Count of Vaudémont
  • Gottfried, Lord of Gondrecourt

Hugo found himself in a long-standing conflict with the Dukes of Lorraine , against whom he tried to expand his territory. For this he even recognized the feudal sovereignty of the Counts of Bar over Vaudémont in 1202 in order to win them over as allies against the Duke. But that did not prevent him from continuing to pursue an independent policy. In the War of Succession for Champagne (1215-1221) he sided with the pretender Érard von Brienne , while the Count of Bar supported Countess Blanka and her son Theobald IV .
