Juergen Sommer (born February 27, 1969 in New York City ) is a former American football player . He played in the position of goalkeeper .
Career as a player
Sommer attended the high school of the Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana and played on the local school team. Because of his achievements, he was also appointed to the All-American selection team.
He then attended Indiana University from 1987 , where very quickly became the goalkeeper of the college team. After he was named Collegiate Goalkeeper of the Year in 1990 , he moved to Luton Town in England in 1991 in what was then the Football League First Division . In the next 6 years he played for various English clubs, such as Torquay United and the Queens Park Rangers .
In 1998, Sommer moved back to the USA and played there for the Columbus Crew until 1999 . After losing his regular place in the 1999 season due to knee injuries, he moved to New England Revolution for the 2000 season . He previously played a game for Connecticut Wolves in the USISL A-League. After another injury, he ended his career as a football player in autumn 2002. In February 2001 he was on loan for a game in goal at Bolton Wanderers after all goalkeepers were injured there.
Summer completed a total of 10 international matches for the USA national team . He was part of the US squad at the 1994 and 1998 World Championships, but was not used there.
Coaching career
Sommer, who holds a USSF “A” coaching license, was an assistant coach at Indiana University from 2004 to 2007. He was then the goalkeeping coach of the US national soccer team from 2007 to 2010. He also looked after various youth teams at the Carmel United Soccer Club . In addition to his work as a coach, Sommer was a long-time member of the United States Soccer Federation's Athletes Council and has been a member of the US Soccer Foundation's Board of Directors since 2011.
In June 2013, Sommer was confirmed as the new coach of the US team Indy Eleven . In addition to his coaching activity, he is also the responsible Director of Soccer Operations .
Private
Sommer lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife, Susie, and two sons, Tommy and Noah.
