Kettering Town (officially: Kettering Town Football Club ) - also known as The Poppies - is an English football club from Kettering , Northamptonshire , which has played in the Conference National , the fifth-highest division in England, since 2008 . The club's venue is 6,170-seat Rockingham Road .

Club history

The club was founded in 1872 and is one of the oldest football clubs in England. The club first took part in regular league operations in 1892 and played in the Midland League . In the 1895/96 season, the first rank in the Midland League was achieved and the club was added to the United League as one of the founding members for the following season . In 1900 Kettering was accepted into the Southern League and after four years rose to the second division of the Southern League, six years later he was promoted back to the first division of the Southern League. In 1912 the club left the league and returned to this division in 1923.

Kettering Town was then represented almost continuously in the same league for many years, in 1930 the inclusion in the Birmingham & District League followed . After that, the club was represented with moderate success in the league and could not record any successes worth mentioning. In 1950, the club returned the Southern League and was able to complete the league as a winner in the 1956/57 season and took part in the game operations of the Southern League North Western, Southern League Division One and Southern League in the following years. In 1973 it succeeded again to book the profit of the Southern League.

After many years, the team was able to draw attention to itself in a cup competition and in 1979 reached the final of the FA Trophy for the first time in the club's history . However, the game was lost 2-0 to the Stafford Rangers and the title win was not realized.

In 1979, the club made another league change with the entry into the newly formed Alliance Premier League , the predecessor of today's Football Conference . The club placed second in the league in its second season in the APL. In the following three seasons, relegation was only just barely ensured after moderate placements. Even after the Alliance Premier League was renamed in 1986 to the current name Football Conference of the league, the club was mostly moderate in midfield, but was able to achieve consistency several times with placements in the first five places. In 2000, Kettering Town again made it into the final of the FA Trophy, but lost again and Kingstonian FC won the trophy.

After the relegation was missed in the 2000/01 season with only 43 points, relegation to the Southern League followed at the end of the season. The team qualified first in the following season for direct promotion to the Football Conference. After the major restructuring of the English league system, Kettering was classified in the Isthmian League Premier Division . Although the club found itself only on a rank in the middle of the table in the following year, he was again included in the Football Conference. After the promotion to the Conference National was missed in the first two years, the promotion for the fifth highest division succeeded after a convincing 2007/08 season. The club was able to earn a total of 97 points in 42 games and suffered only five defeats. In the following season, as eighth place with 76 points, the team narrowly missed participation in the promotion playoffs.
