Edris Albert "Eddie" Hapgood (born September 24, 1908 in Bristol , † April 20, 1973 in Leamington Spa ) was an English football player and coach . He was long-time captain of Arsenal FC and the English national team in the 1930s .

Athletic career

The left defender began his career in the amateur field and worked in parallel as a milkman before he then joined the club Kettering Town , where he made his breakthrough due to good performances.

In October 1927 he signed the legendary Arsenal coach, Herbert Chapman , for a transfer fee of 950 pounds. At Arsenal he was part of an extremely successful team that won five English championships and two FA Cup trophies between 1931 and 1938 . Hapgood played in a total of 440 games and was one of the few defenders who could successfully make a duel with Stanley Matthews on the field.

Hapgood played 30 international matches for the English national team between 1933 and 1939 and was team captain in 21 games. He took part in the notorious Battle of Highbury , when England won 3-2 in an overly tough game against the then current world champions from Italy , with the Italian team playing almost the entire game with only 10 players. Hapgood broke his nose in the process.

In what he said was his darkest chapter, he played against Germany on May 14, 1938 in Berlin and took part in a collective Hitler salute from the English team before the game that his team was supposed to win 6-3 .

The Second World War then ended Hapgood's career. He was then in charge of successively coaching the clubs Blackburn Rovers , Watford FC and Bath City and then completely said goodbye to football.

Hapgood was then the owner of a youth hostel for the Christian youth organization YMCA in Harwell / Berkshire and then in Weymouth / Dorset .

He died on Good Friday 1973 at the age of 64 in Leamington Spa while attending a sporting event and was buried in Leamington Spa in Brunswick Street Cemetery .
