Vaire-Arcier is a former commune in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté . With effect from June 1, 2016, it was merged with Vaire-le-Petit to form the Commune nouvelle Vaire .
geography
Vaire-Arcier is located at 256 m , about eleven kilometers east-northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The double municipality extends in the Doubstal on the left southern side of the river, on the northwestern edge of the Jura , at the northern foot of the Jura border chain (Côte).
The area of the 12.78 km² municipal area comprised a section of the Doubstal. The northern border ran along the Doubs, which flows westwards through a 1.5 kilometer wide, flat valley and at the same time forms the waterway of the Rhine-Rhône Canal . From the course of the river, the community area extends south over the flat valley floor and the adjacent wooded steep slope, which is traversed by limestone bands in several places, to the crest of the Jura ridge. From a geological and tectonic point of view, this represents an anticline of the Jura folds and is oriented towards the west-south-west-east-north-east in accordance with the direction of the mountain range in this region. On the wide, densely wooded ridge of the Côte , the highest point of Vaire-Arcier is reached at 561 m.
The municipality consisted of the districts Vaire ( 256 m ), Arcier ( 250 m ) and Corcelles ( 260 m ), located in the Doubs valley at the northern foot of the Côte. Neighboring towns of Vaire-Arcier are Novillars , Vaire-le-Petit and Deluz in the north, Osse in the east, Nancray and Gennes in the south and Chalèze and Roche-lez-Beaupré in the west.
history
The former municipality of Vaire-Arcier was probably already settled during Roman times. The Arcier springs were then taken and used to supply Vesontio (Besançon) with water. Remains of the Roman aqueduct are still visible today.
Vaire was under the rule of Montfaucon since the Middle Ages , while Arcier formed an ecclesiastical rule under the Archbishop of Besançon. Together with Franche-Comté , both villages came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1974 the two previously independent municipalities Vaire-le-Grand and Arcier merged to form the double municipality Vaire-Arcier.
Attractions
The single nave church of Vaire was built in the 18th century in the classical style. In Vaire-le-Grand is the castle, which was built in the 18th century on the site of a previous building from the late Middle Ages. It is surrounded by a large French garden and is now used as a retirement home. There is also a castle in Arcier, which was built in the 19th century and which includes a hunting lodge ( Pavillon de Saint-Marc ) from the 17th century. The Chalet du Caprice dates from the 19th century.
The Arcier springs are located near the Arcier district .

With 553 inhabitants most recently (as of January 1, 2014), Vaire-Arcier was one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 310 and 410 people, a significant increase in population has been recorded since the beginning of the 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Vaire-Arcier was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding), forestry and fishing. There used to be a paper mill in Arcier. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Besançon agglomeration.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic, although it is away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from Vaire-le-Petit on the main road N83, which leads from Besançon to Montbéliard . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around ten kilometers away. There are other road connections with Chalèze and Osse.
