Vaire-le-Petit is a former municipality in the French department of Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . With effect from June 1, 2016, it was merged with Vaire-Arcier to form the Communauté nouvelle Vaire .
geography
Vaire-le-Petit is located at 256 m , about ten kilometers northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Doubstal on the right north side of the river opposite Vaire , on the northwestern edge of the Jura , at the northern foot of the Côte.
The area of the 1.26 km² municipal area covers a section of the Doubstal. The southern border runs along the Doubs, which flows to the west through an approximately 1.5-kilometer-wide, flat valley and at the same time forms the waterway of the Rhine-Rhône Canal . Vaire-le-Petit is located within a former meander arc that extends northwards. From the course of the river, the municipal area extends northward into the broad valley floodplain and northeast to the westernmost section of the Montagne Notre-Dame d'Aigremont . Here, at 378 m, the highest point in Vaire-le-Petit is reached.
Neighboring towns of Vaire-le-Petit are Amagney in the north, Deluz in the east, Vaire-Arcier in the south and Novillars in the west.
history
Stone Age tools were found near La Montoillotte, which prove that the area of Vaire-le-Petit was already settled during the Moustérien (Middle Paleolithic). Ceramic fragments from the Bronze Age and Gallo-Roman graves were also discovered.

With its last 236 inhabitants (January 1, 2014), Vaire-le-Petit is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 80 and 150 people, a significant increase in population was recorded, especially during the 1950s. Since then, the population has remained at a relatively constant level.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until the 20th century, Vaire-le-Petit was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and fishing. A brick factory had existed since the 17th century (operations were closed in 1914). In addition, there are now some local small businesses, including precision mechanics and car dealerships. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Besançon agglomeration.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N83, which leads from Besançon to Montbéliard . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around ten kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Vaire-Arcier and Deluz. The Besançon - Montbéliard railway crosses Vaire-le-Petit, the nearest train station is in nearby Novillars.
