John "Jack" Balmer (born February 6, 1916 in Liverpool , † December 25, 1984 ibid) was an English football player . The striker , who played mainly for Liverpool FC , is considered one of the club's major players in the period immediately after the Second World War .

Life

Jack Balmer in 1916 in Liverpool district of West Derby born. His family had a footballing tradition: Jack's uncle Bill and Bob had played for Everton FC in the early 20th century . As a teenager, Jack Balmer also played for the Toffees before he moved to Liverpool in 1935 at the age of 19 .

Until the outbreak of World War II in 1939, Balmer played with the Reds . He made guest appearances as a player at Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United during the war . In addition, he played unofficial selection games for England during this time, which should remain his only international appearances.

After the war ended in 1945, Balmer was back under contract with Liverpool. In the following years he became the team's top scorer alongside Albert Stubbins . The first post-war season 1946/47 ended the two strikers with 24 goals each, which helped Liverpool to the first championship after 24 years. This remained Balmer's only title. From 1947 to 1949 he led the team as captain on the field.

He ended his career in 1952.
