The central part is taken up by the Grand Champier plateau ( 570  m ), which covers an area of approximately 1 km². It continues in the north in the wide ridge of the Bois de la Chau , on which the highest peak of By is reached at 640 m. The southern border runs above the steep drop to the Ivrey basin. Attractions

The Church of Notre-Dame originally goes back to a medieval building ( Gothic choir), but has been redesigned several times over the years. Only the square tower of a former manor house has been preserved.

With 78 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), By is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (219 people were still counted in 1886), slight population growth was recorded again in the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, By was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming and cattle breeding) and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector there are almost no jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from Rennes-sur-Loue on the main road N83 (Besançon - Lons-le-Saunier). Further road connections exist with Paroy and Bartherans.
