Václav Malý (born September 21, 1950 in Prague ) is titular bishop of Marcelliana and auxiliary bishop in Prague .

Life

From 1969 to 1976 Malý studied at the Ss Cyril and Methodius Faculty in Litoměřice and was ordained a priest on June 26, 1976 . He was chaplain from 1976 to 1978 in Vlašim and Pilsen .

In February 1977 he signed Charter 77 , a document that called for justice and freedom in communist Czechoslovakia. In 1978 he became a member of the Committee on Defense of the Unjustly Persecuted.

In 1979 he was deprived of his “state approval for the priestly service” and worked as an assistant in surveying . In May 1979 he was arrested for "republic subversion" and put on trial. From 1980 to 1986 he worked as a stoker in several hotels in Prague. During this time he worked in secret as a priest. He celebrated Holy Mass in apartments, in summer also in the forest, donated the sacraments and held Bible studies and lectures. From 1981 to 1982 he was spokesman for Charter 77, and in 1989 he was spokesman for the Prague Citizens' Forum (OF).

From 1990 to 1991 he was pastor in St. Gabriel in Prague- Smíchov , from 1991 to 1996 pastor in St. Antonius in Prague- Holešovice .

On December 3, 1996, he was appointed titular bishop of Marcelliana and auxiliary bishop in Prague by Pope John Paul II . The episcopal ordination he received by the Archbishop of Prague, Cardinal Miloslav Vlk , and the co-consecrators Giovanni Coppa , the apostolic nuncio in the Czech Republic and Jaroslav Škarvada , the auxiliary bishop of Prague, on 11 January 1997 at Prague's St. Vitus Cathedral .

For his services Václav Malý was 1998 with the Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk Order III. Class excellent.
