The chloroplasts, which are 2 to 3 micrometers in diameter, are disc-shaped and pyrenoids are absent. Each cell usually has two large paramylon granules, one in front of and one behind the nucleus . The outer skin is provided with warts arranged in a row, which consist of a mucus provided with iron hydroxide , the warts are stronger and more numerous in an iron-rich environment. The cells produce a thin, slimy covering. Palmellae and cysts are unknown.
