The NeverEnding Story is a pop song from 1984 and the theme song of the score for The Neverending Story . It was written by Giorgio Moroder and Keith Forsey and sung by Limahl .

Music and lyrics

The NeverEnding Story is a synth pop or new wave song that is typically played by keyboards and synthesizer drums, as is typical for Moroder . It starts with a fade-in and ends with a fade-out , which symbolizes the neverending story. An electric guitar solo is placed over the bridge . The text also relates to the film. Here it says: "Make believe, I'm everywhere / Given in the light / written on the pages / Is the answer to a never ending story".

Creation and publication

The song was written by Moroder (music) and Forsey (lyrics) and also produced by Moroder. Dee Harris played the guitar. The backing vocals took Beth Anderson. She sang her part separately from Limahl, who recorded in Europe, in the USA. The French version of the piece is entitled The NeverEnding Story ( L'histoire sans fin ) and was sung by Limahl and Ann Calvert; Pierre-André Dousset wrote the text. For the German version of the film, another title track composed by Klaus Doldinger was initially used. After Limahl's version also made it into the charts in Europe, the film was re-released in Germany with the US soundtrack.

Music video

The official music video shows numerous film scenes; In between, Limahl can be seen in front of an ancient mirror in which scenes from the film are also shown. Beth Anderson cannot be seen in the music video. There are at least two different versions; one shows Limahl only briefly and then only film scenes, the second shows Limahl several times, here some film scenes are underlaid with original sounds from the film.

reception

Not only did the song reach the top 20 in the US and high chart positions in many European countries, it was also a number one hit in Sweden and Norway . In Germany, where the single was available in August 1984, it was charted for a total of 21 weeks from August 27, 1984 to January 21, 1985 and reached number two, in the German annual charts 1984 number ten. In the United Kingdom , the single, which was only released there on October 1, 1984, reached number four and on December 1, 1984 silver status for more than 200,000 units sold. The piece was also used in a cover version in a commercial for the Renault Mégane GT.
