Rolleston is a town in the Selwyn District in the Canterbury region ofthe South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The city was named after the politician William Rolleston (1831-1903), who was superintendent of the province of Canterbury from 1868 to 1876 .

geography

The city is located around 22 km west-southwest of downtown Christchurch and around 10 km northwest of Lincoln in the wide plain of the Canterbury Plains .

history

Rolleston was established as a temporary terminus of the Christchurch railway line .

population

Until 1990 the place had less than 1000 inhabitants and only few paved roads, but grew steadily thereafter. In the 2013 census, the city had 9,558 inhabitants, 92.8% more than in the 2006 census.

economy

Wine is grown in the area and there is also a prison, the " Rolleston Prison ".

Road traffic

The New Zealand State Highway 1 touches the city on its north side and connects it directly with Christchurch .

Rail transport

In Rolleston the railway lines branch the Midland Line to Greymouth and the Main South Line via Dunedin to Invercargill . However, the train station for passenger traffic is only served by the TranzAlpine .
