Karen Shire

Karen Shire (* 1959 in Boston ) is an American sociologist who teaches as a professor at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Duisburg .

Life

Shire earned a BA in Sociology and Political Science major from Boston College in 1981 and an MA Sociology major from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1984 . From 1984 to 1986 she studied at the University of Hanover (in preparation for her doctorate, in particular German politics and history ). From 1986 to 1990 she studied again at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a doctorate ( Ph.D. ) up there in sociology.

From 1991 to 1996 Shire was Assistant Professor and from 1996 to 1999 Associate Professor of Sociology at the International Christian University in Tokyo , Japan . During this time she was also (from 1994 to 1997) Research Fellow at the University of New South Wales, Australia . From 1999 to 2005 Shire was Professor (C3) for Sociology and Japanese Studies at the then Gerhard-Mercator University of Duisburg (there were also visiting professorships at the University of Tokyo and at the Max Planck Institute for Social Studies in Cologne). Shire has been Full Professor of Sociology and Japanese Studies at the University of Duisburg-Essen since 2005 and has also been visiting professor at the School of East Asian Studies, University of Sheffield , UK, since 2008 .

Her main interest lies in comparative social research. Further fields of her research relate to the transnationalization of labor markets in Europe and Asia. She also conducts research on topics related to gender studies.

Together with sociology professor Sigrid Quack , Karen Shire established an associated partnership between the International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy and the University of Duisburg-Essen in 2017.
