Limoux ( Occitan Limós ) is a French commune with 10,066 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aude department in the Occitanie region ; it is the administrative seat of the arrondissement of Limoux .
Limoux is located on the River Aude , twenty kilometers south of Carcassonne .
history
There have been traces of human settlement with the menhir "Pierre Droite" (as much as "upright stone") since the Neolithic . A primitive settlement was founded on the hill of Flassian ( Flacianum ), another ( Limosus ) on the banks of the Aude.
In 844, Charles the Bald transferred the site to the nearby Saint-Hilaire Abbey . In the 10th century it belonged to the County of Rasès , whose owner exercised the royal rights here, and later even became the capital of the eponymous vice-county. The development was disrupted by the rise of the Cathars and the following Albigensian Crusade . Then the place came to Lambert de Turry, who was now called Lambert de Limoux. In the 14th century Limoux went to the French crown.
Under Pope John XII. the diocese of Limoux was established in Limoux in 1317 , but was dissolved again the following year. The only bishop was Durandus of St. Pourçain . The cathedral church was the Saint-Martin church.

Every year the longest carnival in the world takes place in Limoux , in 2012 from mid-January to 25th March 2012. The carnival is celebrated on Saturdays and Sundays with parades of the various bandes . These march, accompanied by musicians, in Pierrot costumes through the city to the central square. The parades deal with local events such as politics, the local sports club or well-known originals and take place at 11 a.m., 4.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. There are few taboos in the presentation, but the anonymity of the actors behind the masks and figures should be preserved.
