economy
The area around the place is still characterized by agriculture and forestry, with livestock (cattle and sheep) and fruit growing ( peaches , apricots , figs , cherries , apples , pears and pomegranates ) making up the majority of agricultural production. Viticulture is also practiced: Montazels has a share in the Languedoc wine-growing region and is one of around 40 municipalities that may market their white sparkling wines under the designation of origin Crémant de Limoux , Blanquette de Limoux AOC or Blanquette méthode ancestrale AOC . In the village itself, small trade as well as smaller craft and service businesses predominate.
history
Finds from prehistoric times have not yet been made in the municipal area, but the presence of people in the area has been documented in many ways. The ruins of a country estate ( villa rustica ) date from Gallo-Roman times . The existence of a church is documented in 1004. The County of Razès has existed here since Carolingian times, and was subordinated to the French crown in 1226 in the course of the Albigensian Crusades (1209-1229) and handed over to the Seneschal, who resided in Carcassonne . In a document from 1319 there is talk of a fortress castrum .
Attractions
- The Château de Cazemajou , which dominates the place, dates from the 17th century; it was built entirely from rubble stones and therefore plastered. The building was still inhabited in the first half of the 20th century, but today it is in a poor condition. The only decorative elements are the portal and the staircases or the garden terrace with its balustrades .
- The largely unadorned parish church today also dates from the 17th century. With the exception of the rose window and some corner stones, it was built entirely from rubble stones and is therefore plastered on the inside.
- The house where the pastor of Rennes-le-Château was born is on the small village square near the church. The round fountain basin ( Griffoul ) dates from the middle of the 18th century and was fed by a three-kilometer-long water pipe; the fountain has been recognized as a monument historique since 1951 .
Personalities
- Bérenger Saunière (1852–1917) was pastor in Rennes-le-Château from 1885 until his death.
