history
The existence of a medieval castle is first mentioned in 1170 on the occasion of a troubadour meeting ; However, this was destroyed during the Albigensian Crusade (1210). The old village of Puivert was at the foot of the castle, just below a former lake, the dam of which broke in June 1279; its floods destroyed both Puivert and the cities of Chalabre and Mirepoix . The present place was re-founded in the 15th century.
