In the 19th century the place always had between 300 and 420 inhabitants. Due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture , the population has since declined to the lows of the last few decades.

economy

In earlier times, the residents of the village lived largely on self-sufficiency from agriculture, with both grain and wine being grown. In addition, they ran a little cattle (pigs, chickens, etc.). On the slopes of the hill there are fruit trees and vegetable gardens. As in many places in Languedoc , viticulture has dominated since the 19th century; In the vicinity of the village are the buildings of a regional wine cooperative ( Cave Coopérative du Razès ), which markets its wines through the appellations Aude , Pays Cathare , Malepère and Pays d'Oc . Because of the sales crisis for French wines, cereals ( wheat , maize ) and sunflowers are being sown again on many agricultural areas . Tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) has also played an important role in the income of the population and the municipal budget since the 1960s.

history

Gallo-Roman finds (coins as well as fragments of amphorae and roof tiles ) were made in the municipality , which indicate a settlement that already existed at this time. The church was first mentioned in the year 870, when Charles the Bald gave it to Count Oliba II of Carcassonne . During the Albigensian Crusade (1209) the place was taken by the troops of Simon de Montfort .

Attractions

  • The old town center belongs to the type of round villages ( circulades ) widespread in Languedoc , which were built around a center (castle and / or church).
  • The late Gothic church ( Église Église Notre-Dame ) dates from the 12th to 14th centuries; It has a non-apsidial rectangular floor plan and surprises with its high, unadorned and portal-free western facade crowned by a three-storey bell gable ( clocher mur ) that was subsequently added, and which offers a defensive appearance. The portal is on the south side. The windows on the north side of the nave covered by a wooden vault were installed in the 19th century. The church was recognized as a monument historique in 1948 .
  • A cross ( croix de chemin ) from the 16th century is next to the entrance to the church; it was recognized as a Monument historique in 1941 .
