history

The ending -ac (Latin: -acum ) indicates a Gallic foundation. In Roman times the region was used for agriculture. Since 1004 the place Croux (Provencal for "cross") is attested, which lies with its necropolis in the area of the today almost 1000 hectare large community. The feudal lords of the place changed several times. Around 1615 a castle was built next to the fortified church; this developed into the new settlement core. The community has only been independent since the French Revolution . Bérenger Saunière preached here and in the neighboring village of Rennes-le-Château in 1890/91.
