Axat is a French commune with 547 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aude department in the Occitanie region (before 2016 Languedoc-Roussillon ). It belongs to the canton of La Haute-Vallée de l'Aude in the Limoux arrondissement .

geography

Axat is located in the west of the department in the foothills of the Pyrenees in the north of the Pays de Sault on the upper reaches of the Aude , 49 kilometers southwest of Carcassonne , about 40 kilometers north of the border with Spain and 28 kilometers south of Limoux , between the neighboring communities of Artigues in the southwest, Saint-Martin-Lys in the north and Puilaurens in the east. The village lies in a basin surrounded by wooded mountains.

Attractions

The church Nouvelle église de l'Assomption ("New Church of Our Lady Assumption into Heaven ") was built around 1630. In the church there are two painted wooden statues from the 17th century, one depicting the Evangelist John , the other the Virgin Mary . Both were classified as Monument historique in 1965 . There are also two paintings from the 18th century in the church. One painting depicts the Archangel Michael defeating the devil, the other depicts the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The paintings were classified in 1980 as a Monument historique. The ruins of Axat Castle stand on a rock near the church. The castle belonged to the then Seigneur von Axat, Raymond de Dax, who also had the church built. The bridge over the Aude also dates from the 17th century.

The Grand Menhir of Counozouls stands west of Counozouls in the Aude Valley, south of Axat.

The Aude is a raging white water near Axat and is used for trout fishing and water sports.

Axat is on the D118 which meets the D117 north of the village.

In 1900 the Carcassonne – Perpignan railway was established. The Viaduc des Canals viaduct was built near Axat and spans the Aude with nine arches.
