history

The company was founded in 1997 as a 50:50 joint venture between MSG AgVet ( MSD Sharp & Dohme ) and Rhone Merioux ( Rhône-Poulenc ). Rhône-Poulenc, which at the end of 1999 merged with the German group Hoechst AG to form Aventis , and was called Sanofi-Aventis after another merger , took over the 50% stake from MSD Sharp & Dohme in 2009, which was part of the merger with Schering-Plow was offered. Merial has been Sanofi's animal health division since then.

In March 2010 it was announced that Merial would like to form a new joint venture with Intervet / Schering-Plow , in which the two parent companies Sanofi (Merial) and MSD Sharp & Dohme (Intervet / Schering-Plow) would each have a 50% stake . In March 2011 this was given up by both companies due to complicated antitrust regulations and other reasons.

In June 2016, Sanofi and Boehringer Ingelheim committed to swap the animal health business, Merial, for the self-medication business (CHC). The acquisition was completed on January 1, 2017.
