Serranochromis is a genus of the cichlid family (Cichlidae) that occurs in southern Africa ( Bangweulu , Mweru and Upemba , Kafue , Kasai , Komati , Kunene , Limpopo , Lualaba , Lulua , Luangwa , Luapula , Lufira , Malagarasi , Lake Malawi and Upper Shire , Okavango , Sabie and the upper and middle river systems of the Zambezi ).
features
Serranochromis species are 25 to 56 cm long and have a "beefy", more or less high-backed shape. From the genus Sargochromis , which was originally counted as a subgenus to Serranochromis, Serranochromis differs in that it has more scales in the lateral line (35–41 vs. 28–34), more vertebrae, more soft rays in the dorsal fin and fewer gill rakes . The mouth of the piscivorous fish is strikingly large. Males grow larger, have larger fins, and have egg spots in their anal fin. Both adults and juveniles have single-pointed teeth.
All Serranochromis species are mouthbrooders with very large clutches.
