features

Sargochromis species are 20 to 48 cm long and have a "beefy", more or less high-backed shape. From the genus Serranochromis , to which they originally belonged as a subgenus, Sargochromis differs by a lower number of scales in the lateral line (28–34 vs. 35–41), fewer vertebrae, fewer soft rays in the dorsal fin and more gill rakes . The two or three scales at the end of the first sideline are two to three scales of equal size below the base of the dorsal fin. Males are slightly larger, more colorful, have larger fins and have egg spots in the anal fin. Young fish have double-pointed teeth.

All Sargochromis species are maternal, ovophilic mouthbrooders .

species
