Adam Ries

The Adam Ries Competition is a mathematical competition for 5th grade students in Saxony , Thuringia , Franconia and Bohemia .

The three-stage (homework, state competition, country comparison) competition that has been taking place since 1981 aims to convey joy in puzzling and arithmetic. In addition, it should challenge knowledge and skills in solving problematic tasks, arouse mathematical interests, generate curiosity about old German units of measure and money and give suggestions for a historical foray into mathematics and regional history. In addition, the work of Adam Ries is brought closer and a connection between the cities of Staffelstein , Erfurt and Annaberg is established or deepened: Ries was born in Staffelstein in 1492 or 1493, in Erfurt he ran an arithmetic school, and Ries died in Annaberg in 1559.

The competition is organized and carried out on behalf of the Adam Ries Association .
