Diercke knowledge
Diercke Wissen (previously Geographie Wissen , 2003–11 National Geographic Wissen ) is a student competition for 12 to 16 year old students in Germany . With over 310,000 participants, it is the largest competition of its kind and takes place annually from January to May. The competition tests the students' geographical knowledge and is carried out by the Association of German School Geographers in cooperation with Westermann and the Diercke World Atlas . The National Geographic Society was a cooperation partner until 2011 .
procedure
The competition begins with the determination of the best in class in grades 7-10 in January. This is followed by the competitions to determine the school winners in February and the state winners in March. The first three stages of the competition are carried out by the student filling out a test sheet. After the 16 state winners and the winner of the German schools abroad have been determined, a national final takes place in which the 17 candidates compete against each other in several rounds. At the end of the national finals, a national winner is found. The German team for the National Geographic World Championship is put together from him and the next best from two competition years .
The competition was supplemented by a further questionnaire for grades 5 and 6, the WISSENs Juniors, which is played out of competition with the actual competition. This is an extension that goes back to the wish of the schools to include the youngest pupils in the competition.
