History fair
The history fair is an annual event of the Federal Foundation for the coming to terms with the SED dictatorship , each dedicated to a specific topic of German-German history. It is a forum for "providers" and "buyers" of historical-political educational work in the Federal Republic. The three-day event is aimed at institutions and representatives from the federal, state and local governments, as well as anyone interested in the history of German division and unity. The aim of the conference is to promote the broadest possible public discussion of recent German contemporary history.

The history fairs have been held annually since 2008. The idea for the event format came about during the preparations for the celebrations on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution and German unity. With this, the Federal Foundation wanted to create a platform to bundle existing nationwide initiatives, initiate projects and promote the networking of individual projects. The first history fair took place in March 2008. The second conference was held in January 2009 under the patronage of the then Federal Minister of Transport, Wolfgang Tiefensee . The third history fair under the patronage of the then Federal Minister of the Interior Thomas de Maizière in February 2010 broadened the perspective and was dedicated to the topic of "20 Years of German Unity in Europe". The 50th anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall formed the background of the fourth history fair “Divided Land - Common History” in February 2011. The venue for all previous events was the small Thuringian town of Suhl , which - almost symbolically - is literally in the middle of Germany.
Structure and structure
On all three days of the history fair there is a dense program of panel discussions and specialist lectures as well as public evening events. a. Film premieres, book readings and interviews with contemporary witnesses count. The second day of the conference is traditionally intended for the presentation of the participants' projects. In working groups, they can present and discuss their initiatives, events, ideas and concepts. As at a “real” trade fair, the conference guests can also find out more about current historical and political education offers in Germany at a “market of possibilities”. Participation in the history fair is open to both institutions and interested private individuals. In 2010 the history fair was one of the winners in the nationwide competition Land of Ideas.
