history

The village is first mentioned in 1146 under the then name Summo Vico . The Sonvico area with Cimadera , Dino and Villa Luganese formed the Sonvico domain and belonged to the San Carpoforo Abbey of Como .

The village subsequently received all sorts of privileges from the Dukes of Milan , the Rusca and the Sanseverino. In 1412 Filippo Maria Visconti granted him local tax exemption, with the exception of customs and salt tax. Freedom from customs duties was granted to him by Franchino Rusca in 1437, while the consuls exercised lower jurisdiction in criminal matters. Francesco Sforza gave him ducal immediacy in 1450, as well as the castle guard and civil jurisdiction up to 100 pounds for an annual payment of 200 guilders.

In the first half of the 15th century it had to provide 82 soldiers for the Duke of Milan. In the 15th century Sonvico was a center of the Ghibellines of Lugano and took an eager part in the battles that ravaged the Lugano Valley in the second half of the century. On the side of the Sanseverino, who had been driven out of the valley, Sonvico opposed the Ghibellines in 1467 and the Duke of Milan from May to September. Only after a fine of 2,000 ducats had been imposed on it did it decide to return the castle to the Duke. In 1497 Sonvico made peace with Lugano.
