Toponomics

The name Pregassona is documented for the first time in a document from June 3, 1222.

history

The village was first mentioned in 1222 as Pregasona . Cremation graves from the Iron Age have been found in the village of Viarnetto. The toponymy (Sala) suggests that Pregassona was a Longobard garrison. The Bishop of Como owned goods here in the 14th century. With Sala, Ligaino, Orlino, Albonago and Viganello, the village formed the Concilium (neighborhood) Pregassona in 1335 around the Church of Santa Maria in Pazzalino.

Until it was incorporated into the city of Lugano on April 4, 2004, it formed an independent political municipality.
