Brè is located on a plateau at an altitude of 800 m below the Monte Brè summit (925 m), which is Lugano's local mountain and a well-known viewpoint with a funicular. From Lugano, a road (approx. 9 km) and hiking trails (stairs ascent) from Lugano-Cassarate and Lugano-Gandria connect the village with Lake Lugano approx. 500 m below.

history

Brè was first mentioned under this name in 1280 and under other name variations in the 14th century. Archaeological finds (necropolises) suggest a Roman or possibly pre-Roman settlement. In the Middle Ages, possessions in Brè are attested for the monastery of San Abbondio and families in Como . The village of Brè was characterized by cattle breeding. In the second half of the 19th century, this branch of industry offered too few prospects, which resulted in a wave of residents emigrating as masons or farmers, particularly to the United States and South America.

Until 1912, Brè could only be reached by mule track from Lugano. With the construction of the driveway and the funicular (finished in 1912) Brè was opened up for tourism; a first hotel was built. In the period that followed, the quiet place in its exposed location high above the lake attracted numerous artists; one of them was Wilhelm Schmid , a painter of the New Objectivity , who spent the evening of his life in Brè and left his house as a museum after his death in 1971. The Hungarian painter Jozeph Birò and the Sardinian Aligi Sassu also spent their last artistic creative phase in Brè. The autodidactic painters Pasquale Gilardi and Luigi Taddei were born in Brè at the end of the 19th century . Living artists on site are the graphic artist and sculptor Marco Prati , Antonio Scoppazini and the theater director Michel Poletti .

The living conditions for the villagers were harsh until the middle of the 20th century. Until 1950 Brè had no connection to the municipal drinking water supply; Water had to be drawn from wells. Up until around 1970, cigarette smuggling was an active source of secondary income. Today tourism is one of the most important industries.

A Christophorus fresco on the outer wall comes from Luigi Taddei.
  • Church, village square with wash fountain ( Lavatoio ) and the streets that extend from it form the harmonious ensemble of a Ticino village that has been preserved in its original layout
  • The Wilhelm Schmid Museum shows a selection of the artist's works and documents his life.
  • The Arredo Artistico , which begins at the church forecourt, leads as a circular route past numerous works by the artists of Brè.
