history

In 2009 there was a dispute between Sky Italia and the private television company Mediaset, which belongs to Silvio Berlusconi's media group . As early as 2008, Berlusconi, in his role as Prime Minister at the time, decided to double the taxes on pay-TV subscriptions, which was seen as an attack on Rupert Murdoch's broadcaster. Mediaset refused to advertise Sky Italia on its free to air channels; three of the company's channels refused to sell advertising time to Sky Italia. Sky then changed its encryption so that it was possible for all Skys HD customers to receive all free-to-air channels, including the Mediaset channels. Silvio Berlusconi then described Sky as an "enemy" and his son and Mediaset deputy boss Pier Silvio Berlusconi spoke of a "war" with the broadcaster.

The media group News Corporation (now 21st Century Fox) then filed a lawsuit against Mediaset for distortion of competition. Mediaset launched a free satellite program to compete with Murdoch in the pay-TV market.

Data

As of March 31, 2012, the platform had a subscriber base of 4.94 million subscribers (with an estimated viewership of approximately 14 million). The market share in November 2011 was 11.21%. Sky Italia is one of the largest pay TV providers in Europe .

Encryption

Sky Italia, like Sky Deutschland and BSkyB , uses the Videoguard encryption system , which was developed by NDS - a subsidiary of News Corporation . Until April 2004, Sky used the SECA Mediaguard 2 encryption system .
