Yorktown is a small town in York County , Virginia , in the United States of America . The city is home to 195 inhabitants (as of 2010).

history

The city, which was founded in 1691, was named after the city of York in Northern England . Yorktown was made famous by the 1781 Battle of Yorktown , one of the decisive battles in the American Revolutionary War . The city was the base of British General Charles Cornwallis during the Battle of Yorktown.

An important battle also took place in the same place during the Civil War (1861–1865). Between April and May 1862 the city was besieged by Union soldiers .

Today Yorktown is home to two military facilities belonging to the United States Armed Forces :

Together with Jamestown and Williamsburg , Yorktown forms the Historic Triangle . Yorktown is home to a Colonial National Historical Park, which includes the Yorktown National Battlefield and Yorktown National Cemetery. A monument designed by Richard Morris Hunt commemorates the victory of 1781. The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown , also located here, shows the events of the American Revolutionary War with the means of a Living History Museum.

Another museum in Yorktown is the Watermen's Museum , which shows the history of the Chesapeake Bay fishing.
