Montgomery County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 83,629 people and a population density of 83 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Christiansburg . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Montgomery County is located in central southwest Virginia, about 30 km north of West Virginia , and covers an area of 1009 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Roanoke County , Floyd County , Pulaski County , Giles County, and Craig Counties .
history
It was formed in 1772 from parts of Fincastle County. It was named after Richard Montgomery , a general in the American Revolutionary War .

As of the 2000 census , Montgomery County's population was 83,629. Of these, 9,160 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 30,997 households and 17,203 families. The population density was 83 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.00 percent white, 3.65 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 3.97 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.63 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.53 percent were from two or more races. 1.58 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 30,997 households, 25.3 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 44.8 percent were married couples living together, 7.6 percent were single mothers, 44.5 percent were non-families, 25.5 percent were single households and 6.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.87 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 17.1 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 31.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 17.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 8.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 26 years. For every 100 females there were 110.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 110.9 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,330 , and the median income for a family is $ 47,239. Males had a median income of $ 33,674 versus $ 23,555 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,077. 8.8 percent of families and 23.2 percent of the population are below the poverty line. These included 14.6 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 8.8 percent of residents aged 65 and over.
