John E. Massey

John Edward "Parson" Massey (born April 2, 1819 in Spotsylvania County , Virginia , † April 24, 1901 in Charlottesville , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1886 and 1890 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Virginia.

Career

John Massey graduated from Richmond Seminary , which later became the University of Richmond . Shortly after graduating from this school in 1845, he became a clergyman in the Baptist Church . In the years that followed, he preached for that church in Loudoun and Albemarle Counties . From 1878 he was politically active. At that time he was involved in founding the short-lived Readjuster Party . For four years he was one of their party leaders. Then he fell out with other politicians of this party and switched to the Democrats . In 1882 he ran unsuccessfully as an independent candidate for a seat in the United States House of Representatives . He sat in the Virginia House of Representatives for two terms . He was also a member of the State Senate for one term . The relevant data have not survived.

In 1885, Massey was elected lieutenant governor of Virginia alongside Fitzhugh Lee . He held this office between 1886 and 1890. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. In 1890 he became his state's minister of education. In 1892 he came under suspicion of corruption. He was accused of misappropriating funds. This ended his active political career. It is not known whether he was convicted in any way. Massey retired to his country estate Ash Lands in Albemarle County, where President James Monroe had once lived. He died in Charlottesville on April 24, 1901.
