John Lawrence Marye

John Lawrence Marye Jr. (born November 4, 1823 in Fredericksburg , Virginia , † August 1902 ) was an American politician . Between 1870 and 1874 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Virginia.

Career

John Marye attended private schools in Fredericksburg and then studied at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career. In 1861 he took part as a delegate at the assembly that decided Virginia's exit from the Union. It is not known what position he took there. Between 1863 and 1865 he was a member of the Virginia General Assembly . The source does not explicitly say in which chamber he was sitting. There are different details about his party affiliation. In the sources he is mentioned once as a member of the Conservative Party and then as a democrat . In 1869 he was a member of a constitutional convention of his state.

After the resignation of Lieutenant Governor John F. Lewis , who moved to the US Senate , Marye was appointed his successor in the second highest office in Virginia. This he held between January 1870 and January 1874. He was Deputy to Governor Gilbert Carlton Walker and Chairman of the State Senate . After serving as Lieutenant Governor, John Marye returned to practice as a lawyer. He still held a few representative offices and died in August 1902.
