Edward Echols

Edward Echols (born September 2, 1849 in Monroe County , Virginia , †  December 19, 1914 in Staunton , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1898 and 1902 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Virginia.

Career

Edward Echols, born in what is now West Virginia , was the son of John Echols (1823-1896), a local politician and brigadier general in the Confederation Army during the Civil War . After the war the family moved to Staunton. Edward studied law and practiced as a lawyer. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1883 and 1888 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives ; from 1889 to 1896 he was a member of the State Senate .

In 1897 Echols was elected lieutenant governor of Virginia alongside James Hoge Tyler . He held this office between 1898 and 1902. He was Deputy Governor and formal chairman of the State Senate. Between 1906 and 1914 he was again a member and since 1908 incumbent President ( President Pro Tempore ) of the Senate of Virginia. Echols was also active in the banking industry and was President of the National Valley Bank in Staunton from 1905 . He died on December 19, 1914.
