Robert Craig Kent
Robert Craig Kent (born November 28, 1828 in Wythe County , Virginia , † April 30, 1905 in Wytheville , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1894 and 1898 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Virginia.
Career
Robert Kent came from a distinguished family in Virginia. His father of the same name was a large landowner and farmer. The younger Kent attended public schools in his home country and then enrolled at Georgetown College in Washington, DC . He then studied at Princeton University . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1853, he began to work in Wytheville in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He took part as a delegate in the assembly that decided in 1861 the exit of Virginia from the Union. He was twice a district attorney in Wythe County. He also sat twice in the Virginia House of Representatives . He also got into banking and was President of the Farmers Bank of Wytheville for many years .
In 1893, Kent was elected lieutenant governor of Virginia alongside Charles Triplett O'Ferrall . He held this office between 1894 and 1898. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . After the end of his time as Lieutenant Governor, he no longer appeared politically. He died in Wytheville on April 30, 1905.
