Richard Joseph Davis

Richard Joseph Davis Jr. (born August 7, 1921 in Portsmouth , Virginia , †  March 4, 1999 there ) was an American politician . Between 1982 and 1986 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Virginia.

Career

Richard Davis attended the College of William & Mary . He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War . After graduating from the University of Virginia with a law degree and admission to the bar, he began working in the profession. Over the years he also entered other industries. He became president of Tidewater Professional Sports and the company Virginia Investment and Mortgage Corp . He also sat on the board of several banks and companies.

Politically, Davis joined the Democratic Party . Between 1974 and 1980 he was mayor of his hometown Portsmouth. In 1979 he became Democratic President for Virginia. In 1981 he was elected lieutenant governor of Virginia alongside Chuck Robb . He held this office between 1982 and 1986. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . He was then Minister of Commerce of his state ( Director of the Virginia Department of World Trade ). He died in Portsmouth on June 13, 1999.
