biography
Bundesliga
The 2.16 meter tall son of two former national volleyball players began his athletic career in 2002 with the Red Panters / BC Vienna. In 2006 he moved to Vienna DC Timberwolves , where he made the jump to the fighting team in the 2BL after the U16 . In 2013 he moved to the Arkadia Traiskirchen Lions in the ABL . With a balance of 2.3 blocks and a two-point percentage of 70.3 (each league maximum) as well as 12.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, he was the shooting star of the 2013/14 season and was voted Rookie of the year.
U18 European Championship
During the U18-B-European championship 2012 in Sarajevo, Pöltl already attracted attention with excellent statistics and his talent and received invitations to test trainings from top European clubs. A year later, after the U 18-B European Championship in Macedonia , team captain Pöltl also received offers from US colleges. After visiting the University of Arizona and the University of California ( Berkeley ), Pöltl decided on the Runnin 'Utes of the University of Utah and thus moved to Salt Lake City .
college
Jakob Pöltl was able to fully establish himself in his first season with the Utah Utes . In his first game, he scored 18 points and ten rebounds. Another strong performance he followed in a win against North Dakota State Bison , where he contributed 24 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. In the Pac-12 conference, the Utes only had to admit defeat to the Oregon Ducks in the semifinals and reached third place overall. With a field throw rate of 68.1 percent, 63 blocks, 230 rebounds and a total of 311 points, Pöltl finished the season very successfully. Despite good prospects of being drafted , he waived the NBA draft with the aim of gaining more experience at college and improving himself further. Pöltl, who could have become the first Austrian in the top American basketball league back then, would also have been the first freshman from the University of Utah to make the leap into the NBA.
After further top performances in his second year of college, Pöltl moved into the final of the Pac-12 as a sophomore with his team. In the final, the Utes were subject to the Oregon Ducks in the semifinals in 2015. In the nationwide NCAA Division I Basketball Championship , the Utes missed out on a place in the Sweet Sixteen with a loss to the Gonzaga Bulldogs . Pöltl ended the season with 27 wins, to which he contributed an average of 17.2 points and 9.1 rebounds. With a total of 620 points, he achieved the highest score of a Utes player since Andrew Bogut eleven years ago. Because of his achievements, Pöltl received several individual awards after the end of the season. In March 2016 he was the first Utes player to be named Pac-12 Player of the Year. He was also elected to the 2016 Consensus All-American Second Team by selected media and the national coaching association. In April, he won the prestigious Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award for Best Center on a College Team, presented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame .
NBA
On April 13, 2016, Pöltl announced that he would not start his junior year and would register for the NBA Draft . On June 23, 2016, Pöltl was selected ninth in the draft by the Toronto Raptors and became the first Austrian to join the NBA . After a successful preparation phase, he celebrated his debut in an NBA game on October 26, 2016, where he immediately managed a dunk . After a total of numerous short appearances by Pöltl, the Raptors finished the regular season in second place in the Atlantic Division and prevailed 4-2 against the Milwaukee Bucks in the first playoff round . In the semifinals of the Eastern Conference, the Toronto team lost 4-0 to the reigning NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers . In his first NBA season, Pöltl had a total of 54 appearances with 626 minutes of playing time. His contract with the Toronto Raptors was guaranteed to run until the 2018/19 season with two team options until July 2019 and 2020 and then a qualifying offer for the free agency after 2020/21. In July 2018, his contract with DeMar DeRozan and a first-round pick in the 2019 NBA draft for Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green were swapped for the San Antonio Spurs .
National team
After playing for the U-16s and U-18s, Pöltl made his debut for the Austrian national basketball team on July 30, 2015 as part of the Trentino Basket Cup against Germany . In the 52:64 defeat, he provided five points and rebounds and four blocks. After another defeat against Italy and a win against the Netherlands , the ÖBV team finished the tournament in third place. It also lost in its home debut against Japan .
In August 2017, Austria and Pöltl achieved second place in the pre-qualification for the 2019 World Cup, behind the Netherlands and ahead of Albania . Pöltl became the third best scorer of the tournament with an average of 20 points in the four group games.
