Pervis Ellison (born April 3, 1967 in Savannah , Georgia ) is a retired American basketball player . Ellison was the first overall pick in the 1989 NBA draft . However, his career was predominantly marked by injuries, so he could never meet expectations.

Career

College days

Ellison played for the University of Louisville for four years . In his freshman year of college, Ellison won the NCAA title in 1986 and was named Most Outstanding Player . He was only the second freshman after Arnie Ferrin (1944) to succeed.

NBA

Ellison signed up for the NBA draft in 1989 and was first selected by the Sacramento Kings . Due to injuries, however, Ellison was only used in 48 of 82 games, scoring 8.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. After the season he was transferred to the Washington Bullets . In Washington he developed into the team's top performer in the 1991/92 season and won the NBA Most Improved Player Award . He played the best season of his career and scored 20.0 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.7 blocks per game. The following season, however, his statistics fell due to injuries. He came in the 1992-93 season on a respectable 17.4 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game, so it was the following season only 7.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game. Ellison struggled with knee problems, so he could only complete 49 and 47 games for the Bullets between 1992 and 1994.

In 1995 he moved to the Boston Celtics . His time in Boston was also marked by injuries. Ellison missed many games between 1996 and 1998 due to a broken toe. In the 1998/99 season he did not play a single game for the Celtics. In 2000, Ellison was transferred to the Seattle SuperSonics . After 9 games for the Sonics, he ended his career. Ellison scored 9.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game during his career.

Due to his vulnerability to injury, he was nicknamed "Out of Service Pervis" by his teammate Danny Ainge while he was in Sacramento .
