Daniel Ray "Danny" Ainge (born March 17, 1959 in Eugene , Oregon ) is a retired American basketball and baseball player . Today he is manager ("President of Basketball Operations") of the Boston Celtics in the NBA .
From 1979 to 1981 he played for the Toronto Blue Jays in Major League Baseball before switching to basketball. Between 1981 and 1995 he played in the NBA for the teams of the Boston Celtics , Sacramento Kings , Portland Trail Blazers and Phoenix Suns . Ainge is 1.96 m tall and played the shooting guard position .
Together with Larry Bird , he won two championships in the NBA in the 1980s. After playing as a player, he was head coach at the Phoenix Suns from 1996 to 1999 . Since 2003 he has worked as a manager at the Celtics. In this position he won the 2008 NBA championship with the team.
In May 2019, Ainge suffered a heart attack.
