Jutta Vulpius

Jutta Vulpius (born December 31, 1927 in Erfurt ; † November 16, 2016 in Berlin ) was a German opera singer ( coloratura soprano ).

Life

Jutta Vulpius, married into the family of Christiane Vulpius , Goethe's wife , played the piano in her youth. The encounter with Gerhard Unger on the occasion of a concert during the war reinforced her desire to become active as a singer. From 1946 to 1951 she studied in Weimar with Franziska Martienssen-Lohmann .

She made her debut as "Queen of the Night" in the premiere of Walter Felsenstein's production of The Magic Flute at the Komische Oper Berlin on February 25, 1954. She stayed there until 1956. After that she moved to the Berlin State Opera , whose ensemble she was a member of for 35 years. She had an extensive repertoire and sang in operas by Mozart, Handel and Wagner. Guest appearances have taken her to Barcelona , Rome , Lisbon , Cairo , Moscow , Prague , Munich and Hamburg . For over 10 years she sang in Halle (Saale) at the Handel Festival . From 1954 to 1956 she followed the call to Bayreuth .

In addition to her operatic activities, she also practiced concert, lieder and oratorio singing.
