Gerhard Unger (born November 26, 1916 in Salzungen ; † July 4, 2011 in Stuttgart ) was a German opera singer ( character tenor ).

Life

Unger, born in Bad Salzungen in 1916, studied in Berlin and, due to the war, did not begin his career until 1945, initially as a concert and oratorio singer . In 1947 he made his debut as an opera singer in Weimar , from 1949 to 1961 he was a member of the State Opera Unter den Linden , shortly before the completion of the Berlin Wall he moved to Stuttgart. From 1951 he sang at the Bayreuth Festival .

Unger had a youthful, bright voice, a sunny timbre and a lot of funny talent. One of his star roles was therefore "David" from the Meistersinger von Nürnberg , which is available in numerous recordings: with Herbert von Karajan (1951), Rudolf Kempe (also 1951 and 1956) and Rafael Kubelík (1968). At the age of 52, the tenor still sounded fresh and enthusiastic. Even with his last recording ( doctor and pharmacist von Dittersdorf) his voice showed hardly any signs of wear and tear in 1981.

He also sang as Monostatos ( Die Zauberflöte ), among others in the recording by Otto Klemperer (1963), as well as Pedrillo z. B. at the Salzburg Festival from 1965 to 1967.
