Motto (motto) Union, justice, confidence

The seal of the US state of Louisiana was adopted as the official seal of the state in 1902.

description

In the center of the seal is the representation of a brown pelican ( Pelecanus occidentalis ) - the official state bird - which takes care of three chicks . The number of chicks varied greatly over the years and up to twelve chicks were sometimes shown.

The birds are surrounded by the English state motto:

" Union, justice, confidence "
( Unity, justice, confidence )

The state of Louisiana , two five-pointed stars and an ornament can be seen on the outer ring of the seal .

The seal can be found in a modified form in the flag of Louisiana .

symbolism

In more detailed representations you can see how the mother pelican tears meat from her own breast to feed the chicks.

According to popular belief, the pelican is said to feed its young with its own blood . In a more dramatic version of this legend , when the pelican finds the slain young in the nest, it uses its beak to open its chest to bring them back to life with its own blood. The latter version in particular was related to the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ , making the pelican a motif that is frequently used in church heraldry and in all of religious art .
