The seal of the US state of New Jersey was originally designed by Pierre Eugène du Simitière in 1777 and modified slightly in 1928.
description
The seal includes:
- A sign showing three plows representing New Jersey's agricultural tradition
- A forward facing knight helmet
- A horse's head as a helmet gem
- The goddesses Liberty and Ceres , as representatives of the state motto. Liberty is holding a staff with a Phrygian cap . Ceres holds a cornucopia .
- The banner at the base of the emblem contains the New Jersey state motto, "Liberty and Prosperity", and the year New Jersey became a state: 1776.
This seal is also the central motif in the flag of New Jersey .
