The Oregon Seal was commissioned in 1857 and came into effect in 1859 when Oregon became a state . It's been unchanged since then.

description

The seal shows a bald eagle with its wings spread out. The eagle holds an olive branch in one hand and a quiver with arrows in the other claw . This symbolizes the will for peace, but also the willingness to fight. The eagle stands over a sign that is full of symbols.

The heart-shaped shield shows the Pacific Ocean over which the sun rises and on which a British warship is sailing away. An American merchant ship sails towards the coast. This symbolizes the end of British influences and the independence and strength of the American economy.

Trees , an elk and mountains represent the rich nature of Oregon , while the role of the settlers is represented by a covered wagon pulled by oxen. The covered wagon is as far west as possible on the coast.

A bundle of wheat and a plow show the agricultural potential of the state while a pickaxe stands for the natural resources.

On a banner is the lettering the union , which is also represented by the 33 stars (then number of states). The word " State of Oregon " and the year 1859 are written on the outer ring .
