The seal shows a woman dressed in blue, the ancient personification of bravery ( virtus ), who is depicted as the victor over a dead tyrant . She puts one foot on the vanquished and leans on a spear. She carries a sword in her left hand.
The fallen tyrant, England , holds a broken chain in his left hand and a whip in his right. The fallen crown shows the separation from the monarchy .
Above the woman is the state name Virginia, below the Latin state motto:
- " Sic semper tyrannis ."
- (" So it should always be for the tyrants! ")
The seal can be found again in the flag of Virginia .
