The Illinois state seal was introduced in 1819.

The state seal can be found on the white cloth of the state flag. It shows a bald eagle sitting on a stone with a coat of arms of the United States and a banner in front of the rising sun.

The seal is based on the United States seal .

The eagle holds a banner with the English state motto:

" State sovereignty, national union "
State sovereignty, national unification

Around the seal it says:

" Seal of the State of Illinois "
" Seal of the State of Illinois "

and

" Aug. 26th 1818 "
" August 26, 1818 "

The date refers to the founding of the state of Illinois, which joined the United States on December 3, 1818.
