The flag of the US state of New Jersey dates from 1896.

history

It consists of the emblem of the New Jersey seal on a yellow-brown background. According to the minutes of the New Jersey General Assembly of March 11, 1896, the color goes back to George Washington , who had ordered on October 2, 1779 that the uniform coats of the New Jersey Continental Line be dark blue with yellow-brown strips of evidence. Up until then, yellow-brown strips of evidence were reserved for his own uniform and those of the other generals of the Continental Army and their advisers. On February 28, 1780, the Philadelphia officers finally decreed that the strips of uniform coats of all regiments be the same as the background color of the state flags.

symbolism

The seal shows three plows as symbols for New Jersey's agriculture, a knight's helmet, a horse's head as a helmet jewel , the Roman goddesses Libertas (with a Phrygian cap ) and Ceres (with a cornucopia ).

The banner at the base of the emblem includes the state's motto:

" Liberty and Prosperity "
" Freedom and Prosperity "

The year 1776 refers to the year New Jersey became a state.
